Wilderness. This photo is from Jordan but it’s all over both Israel and Jordan. No one chooses to go into the wilderness. It usually comes upon us as a result of a trauma, grief, or loss. We find ourselves in a world that we don’t recognize or understand. Isaiah speaks of the wilderness in chapters 35, 40 and 43 particularly. In Isaiah 35, the wilderness and desert are glad with blossoms and abundance. In Isaiah 40, the wilderness is a preparation for a road to keep wanderers safe in their passage. There is also someone coming to change the scenery from wilderness to comfort. In Isaiah 43, a savior is promised that will bring salvation to everyone and a new identity as children of God…no more wandering! This is the God that we have in Jesus Christ, who knew 40 years in the wilderness. Even Jesus had temptations to deny his Father as a result of loneliness and hunger. Like Jesus, we claim the Word’s power to defy Satan’s false invitations and draw closer to our Lord We talk to God in prayer, and we call out for help and deliverance as we wait for the new thing that He is doing! When we are out of our wilderness, we will experience joy and gladness as we smell the blossoms of new life restored.
Remember the long way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart.
Deuteronomy 8:2
And the Spirit immediately drove Jesus out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.
Mark 1:12-13
Jesus, my brother, you fully know the toughest wildernesses I have traversed. I am grateful that you have been with me all the way. At times, though, I feel so alone. Looking back at your faithful presence, I am now able to look ahead. I trust in you, knowing you will be with me through whatever is to come. Amen.
