The Danish philosopher Kierkegaard knows how vital it is to be truthful about yourself. His comment about the importance of being honest before God is at the heart of why pride is so common and humility is so rare. We don’t like the truth when it reveals things about ourselves we have been trying to hide or avoid. As you reflect today on the texts and listen to the podcast, ask the Holy Spirit to help you with this kind of honest awareness. Remember Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to us to lead us into the truth, “when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.” (John 16:3). So go ahead and ask the Spirit to be your helper in this kind of “simple human honest” living.
Though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly, but the haughty he perceives from far away.
Psalm 138:6
Jesus spoke this parable, "The rich man said, 'Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?'"
Luke 12:19-20
Steadfast Father, I am thankful that through your constant love, you embrace the lowly. Often, my pride seeks fulfillment in fleeting earthly treasures. Teach me to invest in the eternal instead, and help me to share my abundance with those in need. May my actions reflect humility and generosity, echoing your compassionate example. Amen.
