Jeff reflects on the application of “lending to the poor” and “giving with good measure” with illustrations from a recent experience at a local eatery and a homeless person. (Picture of Fish Taco from “On the Alley” in Santa Barbara, CA) It was these two texts that motivated him to engage with a homeless person and share a meal with him, when he otherwise would have chosen not to engage. He also reflects on the example of his mother teaching him how to measure a “full cup” of brown sugar and the local butcher who always measured a full pound of ground beef with a few ounces more.
Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward them for what they have done.
Proverbs 19:17 NIV
Jesus said, "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap, for the measure you give will be the measure you get back."
Luke 6:38
Kind and gentle Lord, you came to touch the poor, the lost, the least, and the lonely. You have blessed me so abundantly. I confess that I am often blind to the needs right around me. Open my eyes and my heart to opportunities for giving generously as you have given to me. Amen.
