Jeff and special guest Alice talk about Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane on the eve of his betrayal and crucifixion in such agony that great drops of blood fell to the ground from his forehead. While dying crucified to the cross, Jesus cried out with a loud voice in the words of Psalm 22:1 “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Then he cried out again, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” and died. They talk about the difference between distress (being torn apart, unraveling) as different from stress (intense pressure). Too much stress can overwhelm a person. When that happens, where does help come from? Alice shares a personal story of a recent time of distress and how the Lord worked in her and through people to provide help. If you are in grave distress, in which your life is in danger, we encourage you to call a friend or neighbor. Please do not despair, God knows you, hears you, and loves you. Help is on the way.
O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer; and by night but find no rest.
Psalm 22:2
In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.
Hebrews 5:7
Thank you, Lord, for hearing me when I cry. Forgive me when I forget that you listen and care even when I feel you're not there. Guide my Psalm 22 lament into Psalm 23's words of trust in the Shepherd's care. Then forsaken cries can become a new voice speaking comfort and guidance in the Shepherd's name, Amen.
