Bearing The Life And Death Of Christ (Psalm 66:12; 2 Corinthians 4:9 10)

Jesus was not immune to all the pain and suffering that every human being has to endure. And we know that the outcome of His death was that He was raised up from the grave. And yet when He calls us to follow Him, He says to us that we will have trouble in the world. And in today’s texts, we see this very difficult description of how things don’t work out the way we believe they should even though we’re following Him. We know of many stories, even some very recent ones, where believers in different parts of the world are being killed and even beheaded for their faith. To follow Jesus means you will carry in your body, both His life and His death. There is no way around it. If you take up your cross and follow Him, that’s just the way it’s going to be. We’re not a congregation of Marvel heroes but we can marvel that the heroic power of Jesus works through ordinary people like us, in life and in death.

Old Testament Verse

You let people ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water; yet you have brought us out to a spacious place.
Psalm 66:12

New Testament Verse

We are persecuted but not forsaken, struck down but not destroyed, always carrying around in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies.
2 Corinthians 4:9-10

Prayer

Good Shepherd, bring me into your gracious space. May I join others in giving thanks for bringing us through so much. May my life and even my wounds show your helping and healing. May I be a wounded healer and not a wounded wounder. Make my struggles a source of helping and not hurting for others. Amen.
