The image of a guardian angel watching over a child as she walks along a narrow path in the woods is one of the more comforting pictures of being watched over by our Lord. One of the important ways for us to understand the work of the Holy Spirit is the one who calls out to us while we are walking alone in our times of difficulty. The Greek word for Holy Spirit is “Paraclete” which is often translated comforter. But the term means one who walks along beside you (para) and calls out to you (kaleo). How do you hear the Holy Spirit calling out to you? Does the Spirit sometimes have to use words that correct you so that you can get back on the narrow path? When have you been the voice of the Holy Spirit to bring support to a person who needs to hear the word of God’s promise?
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 139:23-24
The gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life.
Matthew 7:14
All-knowing God, free me from the fear that following you might be a joyless obligation. Instead, your everlasting way is full of color, interesting people, and joyful challenges. Already you have led me through the narrow gate. With all my flaws, I am precious to you. Show me the way you have prepared. I'm all eyes and ears! Amen.
