Who is included in the Kingdom of God? Do you recognize who it is that Jesus is talking about in today’s texts? We like to paint our identity in God’s Kingdom using all the comforts that we feel we have in our Lord. But Jesus gives us some uncomfortable language today that begins with the calling of Abraham. He was blessed to “be a blessing” (Genesis 12:2). We are partners with Abraham in that calling. Who are we to bless? When Jesus was raised from the dead, he did not go back to insiders like Pilate or the Jewish leaders in order to validate His purpose in coming to earth. He announced HIs Risen victory to the stranger, the foreigner, the poor, the fatherless, the widow…all those who are outsiders in this world. But each of us knows we also belong in one of those groups. In a world that tries to define us by what we accomplish, we are embraced by what Christ has accomplished for us…He died for you…He chose you…you belong to Him…you are a member of His Kingdom. You have been blessed to be a blessing. Look for others you know who feel like outsiders and help them to see the truth you have found in God’s Kingdom. Jesus has made room for you, you can help other outsiders know there is room for them as well.
Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor.
Zechariah 7:10 NIV
Then the king will say to those at his right hand, "Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world, I was a stranger and you welcomed me."
Matthew 25:34-35
Jesus, you know my tendency to judge and disrespect those who are weak and fragile. Forgive me for shutting out instead of inviting in the needy orphans or widows into my home and life. Open my heart with your love to provide for them and to trust your help to care for the vulnerable without fear. Amen.
