Followers of Jesus have had to fight battles. In these battles millions have died. St Paul describes a battle in today’s text where he experienced the sentence of death. But this time he was spared. Another day in Rome, his prayer in Philippians 1:23 was answered, “I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better.” He died that day. Like St Paul, Martin Luther also fought many battles and had close encounters with death. When he came back to Wittenberg after hiding out in the Wartburg Castle, the Elector Frederick discouraged him. But Luther affirms his action by claiming “I have a higher protector than you…” and even if he should die, Luther claimed he was walking as God wanted him to go. In the midst of his battles, Luther found comfort in the Psalms and wrote hymns based on them. The picture above shows how verse 3 of one of his favorite hymns comes from Psalm 130:5-6. Take time to listen to the whole hymn today, “OUT OF THE DEPTHS I CRY TO YOU.” Read Psalm 130 as you do. Then share what this hymn means to you with someone you know who is in trouble.
And who is a rock besides our God?
Psalm 18:31
Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us.
2 Corinthians 1:9-10 NIV
Great Deliverer, thank you for your mighty hand. When your people were pursued by the chariots of Pharaoh, you parted the sea. When our Lord was crucified and buried, you raised him from the dead. In my conflicts today, help me to stand on your hope and rest on your promises. Amen.
