Jeff and Mim are joined with their daughter Rebekah and her husband Chris for today’s podcast. Chris is a musician and composer who creates new worship songs for a new generation. Many of the new songs are based on scripture. Rebekah loves to sing. Together they recall times of silence before praise. Mim recalls her friend Brittany, a teacher, who lost her voice for an entire year and had to step down from teaching and had given up all hope of ever recovering it and started to learn sign language. When she was signing the Lord’s Prayer, her voice was suddenly restored to her! Jeff recalls times of silence when you don’t know what to pray. He recalls Romans 8, where the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans and sighs too deep for words(vs 26). Jesus also intercedes for us at the right hand of God(vs 34). We know that God is for us, even during the silent times, and that nothing can separate us from His love(vs 31;39). Also, the Psalter is a great place to find expression for your feelings. All the major emotions are in the Psalms: guilt, shame, grief, fear, worry, anxiety, frustration, anger, etc. The Psalms are the prayer book of the church.
My lips will shout for joy when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have rescued.
Psalm 71:23
He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, "His name is John." And all of them were amazed. Immediately, his mouth was opened and his tongue freed, and he began to speak, praising God.
Luke 1:63-64
Jesus, my light and joy, you have gifted me with a voice to praise and proclaim your name. Forgive my silence when I fail to speak of your justice and righteousness. Bless those you have called to share your life-giving Word in pulpits, hospitals, neighborhoods, and beside graves. May my lips also boldly proclaim your praise. Amen.
