The arms race was a race for supremacy in nuclear power between the United States, the Soviet Union, and their allies during the Cold War. Today’s texts reveal the nature of God’s arms race. What is the might that God’s arm chooses to use to dismantle the powers of darkness? God chooses to die. His arm is nailed to a cross. He takes the nails meant for us into His arm. Our sin becomes His and our sin kills him. By dying, Jesus puts an end to all our efforts to arm ourselves for self- defense in this world. His death frees us. Isaiah 59:1 declares: “Behold, the Lord’s hand (arm) is not shortened, that it cannot save…” His arm saved us on the cross. We now are armed with the power of God’s grace to love the world as He loves us. Our arms race is now for Christ alone and for His will to be done in the world by the power of His suffering love.
See, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him.
Isaiah 40:10
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them and be their God."
Revelation 21:3
Emmanuel, God with us, you left your throne to be one of us. Reside in my heart. You are mighty and powerful. All authority is yours. You are also compassionate and kind. My heart belongs to you. You are my God. I am most at home when I am wrapped in your loving arms. Thank you! Amen.
