To be a witness for Jesus means we will have to be a martyr. A martyr is a person who no longer lives for himself or herself but lives for Christ alone. The first part of being a martyr is that each of us has to die. Following Jesus means we die daily as we take up our cross and follow our Lord. Today’s verses help us remember that dying is a normal part of following Jesus. There are many elements of following Jesus. Ask someone you know what he or she has to die each day as they follow Jesus.
You are my witnesses, says the LORD.
Isaiah 43:10
Jesus said, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
Acts 1:8
My Lord, I want my life to make a lasting difference for your kingdom. I know people who know nothing of you or your forgiving love. Teach me how to lead them directly to you. Empower me by your Holy Spirit to speak a timely, graceful word that opens their hearts and moves them to give their lives to you. Amen.
