In Luther’s commentary on “The Magnificat,” he has this line about anyone who is truly humble. They have no clue that they are humble. It’s impossible to be conscious of your humility without becoming proud that you are humble. For us to be free from pride and to experience humility, Dietrich Bonhoeffer has another answer. He connects humility with confessing our sins personally to another person. Our Table Talk ministry invites people to start the process of confession and absolution. We shared this in Honolulu on Sunday and will speak on Wednesday in California and again on Sunday in Washington. To learn more about Bonhoeffer’s insight into humility that corrects pride, download the prayer journal for today. And pray for Sonja and me that those who hear us proclaim this gift of confession and absolution may join the priesthood of all believers to bring the healing of absolution to guilty and angry people.
Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.
Proverbs 16:18
It is what comes out of a person that defiles.
Mark 7:20
My dear Lord, I need a home makeover within my own heart. My private closets of pride and inner rooms of selfishness need cleansing and reordering. Thank you for helping me to see my true inner condition. I surrender to your correction so that my private world will be reflected to the public world where you can use me. Amen.
