Jeff and Mim discuss the themes of “Guilt and Debts” and “Mercy and Forgiveness” in light of current events in China. How can we reflect the nature and character of God in times of intense monitoring and persecution. It does no good to be angry. But how does one learn to continue with resilience and faith and steadfast love and mercy in such times? It requires prayer and humility. We did not discuss this, but I am thinking of Matthew 18:23-35. We are servants of the Most High God. And, as we have received mercy and forgiveness, so we are to extend mercy and forgiveness to others for the sake of Jesus Christ, who died and atoned for the sins of the entire world (past, present, and future). If Jesus prayed while on the cross, “Father, forgive them; they don’t know what they are doing.” We can pray the same, too. Help us, Lord, to offer to others the same mercy and forgiveness you have offered to us.
I am merciful, says the Lord; I will not be angry forever. Only acknowledge your guilt, that you have rebelled against the Lord your God.
Jeremiah 3:12-13
Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
Matthew 6:12
God of my future, your mercy washes all over me. Rebellion and regret could have defined my life forever, but you broke me out of that prison. I am released into the hope of your new day. Help me to forgive as I have been forgiven. Show me today how to loose any burdens I hold over others. Amen.
