Jeff reflects on the meaning of the word “despise” and its antonym. If despise is to disregard or hold in contempt, then what is its converse? How do we despise God’s Word? How do we value, honor, and hold in high esteem? When we refuse to honor and hold in high regard God’s commands, the results are sin and their unintended consequences. Our attempts to coverup only exacerbate the problem. The Law of God is perfect and holy, but it is death to us, because we cannot attain to its high ideals. We fall short and are accused by the same law as being lawbreakers. We need a Savior … and we have one: Jesus Christ, the word become flesh and dwell among us. Emmanuel. (Mim was absent during the recording to attend to the needs of her mother, who fractured her femur and required emergency surgery. Jeff also recently returned from attending to his father, who was hospitalized for Covid and High Blood Pressure. We could benefit from your prayers.)
Why have you despised the word of the LORD, to do what is evil in his sight?
2 Samuel 12:9
Wretched person that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!
Romans 7:24-25
Merciful God, in the mirror of your word I see the evil I have done. Thank you for rescuing me from the death grip of sin. My salvation comes through the sacrifice of your Son Jesus Christ. Help me live a life worthy of your calling. Embolden me to reach out and lead others to victory in Christ. Amen.
