What’s behind the curtain? Is God hiding so we can’t see Him or are we hiding because we don’t want God to see us? The word appearing in the NT text lets us know that God has to reveal Himself to us. Until God appears to us we are in the dark, blind even. But when God appears what is revealed to us? Today’s readings are meant to make us tremble at His word and then to let that word fill us with joy.
All these things my hand has made, so all these things are mine, says the Lord. But this is the one to whom I will look, to the humble and contrite in spirit, who trembles at my word.
Isaiah 66:2
When the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy.
Titus 3:4-5
Gracious God, all that I am and all that I have are gifts from you. I humbly acknowledge that salvation depends on your mercy, not my good works. Forgive my times of self-reliance. Teach me to walk in obedience to your word. Make me an instrument of your goodness and loving kindness to bless the lives of others. Amen.
