The California wild fires (from the photo) and today’s verses about the love of God which covers all offenses, remind us of the story of a hen who was caught in a fire that burned down the barn. After the fire was over, the farmer walked over the ruins of his destroyed property. He saw a lump on the ground. He prodded it with his stick. It was one of his hens, burned to death. The farmer then turned the hen over. What did he see? Out ran three chirping baby chicks. The hen had died in the flames even as it saved the lives of her helpless brood. Jesus once compared himself to a hen. Just like this hen who was eager to cover her chicks with her outstretched wings (Matt 23:37), Jesus covers us with His arms stretched out on the cross. Just like the chicks who fled to the outstretched wings of their mother, as the hymn for today assures us, we have “unto the Savior for refuge have fled.” He gets burned up for us and for our sins. He dies. We live. And because of His “unchangeable love,”…“the flames will not hurt you.” Spread your wings. There are chicks out there who need your unchangeable love.
Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses.
Proverbs 10:12
In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another.
1 John 4:10-11
Loving God, I am awash in your love that covers all my offenses. I can hardly comprehend it! You even call me beloved. And then you sent your Son, Jesus, to teach us how to love. I wish I could say that I love unconditionally. Please help me to have an unwavering love for others. Amen.
