I took a picture of these Calla lilies when I was hiking in Portugal a few years ago in May. It seemed amazing to me at the time that flowers that we honor with such high value in America are essentially wildflowers in Portugal. Jesus’ words today are intended to humble us. Jesus wants us to know that we are tempted to compare ourselves to the Solomons of this world, instead of remembering we are God’s workmanship. So as you look at the lilies or any other beauty in God’s creation, remember God has created you. Your purpose is to reflect the glory of God. Solomon reflected his own glory. Your humble identity on this earth reflects God’s glory since God is working through you to reveal how good God is not only to you, but to all on the Earth, who claim a relationship to God.
Let your work be manifest to your servants and your glorious power to their children.
Psalm 90:16
Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these.
Luke 12:27
Provider God, thank you for giving me more than I need. I have all my daily needs provided. Now I am clothed with a glorious power free from anxiety. I am grateful you call me to be your servant. Make me a determined worker in your kingdom who serves with gladness and humility. Amen.
