Jesus warns us about fear. In fact the Bible has one verse for each day of the year telling us to not be afraid. But in today’s texts, the fear of the Lord is different from the fear that’s created by people or circumstances in our life. And this is the fear that Jesus is most concerned that we face seriously enough so that we live our lives in fear of God, and not in fear of the opinion of others. One of the most challenging verses for me that relates to fearing others is found in John 5:44. Jesus challenges me. “How can you say you believe when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?” What kind of fear controls you? We all need the fear of God to be the one fear that shapes our life for until we come to terms with that fear we will always be controlled by what other people think or do or say about us. And then we’re not free. It’s our prayer that this ministry of “forgivin livin” will be used by Jesus to help you discover the fear of God and free you from those other fears in your life.
Surely the city will fear me; it will accept correction.
Zephaniah 3:7
Lord, who will not fear and glorify your name? For you alone are holy.
Revelation 15:4
Holy God, thank you for creating this glorious world. Forgive me for feeling so small that my errors don't matter. Please open my ears to corrections you give in love. Turn me around when I'm on the wrong track. Help me resist evil and speak your name boldly. Teach me to care lovingly for all you have made. Amen.
