What are you living through? The Gospel proclaims that you and I are dead to what once held us captive…ourselves…our need to be noticed…our need to be enough…our fear of falling short…We no longer have to try to make much of ourselves in our marriages, our children, our work, our sports, our relationships or anything. All these fall under the law. We try to perform well to make ourselves look like we are good enough. The energy spent on ourselves is drowned in baptism. Just like the enemies of God’s people were drowned in the Red Sea. We are no longer slaves to fear. We are slaves to the love of Christ which flows through us into the world (as we learned yesterday). After Saul became Paul, he wanted everyone to enjoy the freedom in Christ which he had. But this freedom to live through Christ was not an easy street. As the picture above reveals, Paul’s life was not a bed of roses…more thorns that roses. Even one in his flesh. So as you discover what it means for you to be dead to the law, consider what it now means for you to live through Christ and for Him. Consider this great verse from 1 John 4:9. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that we might live through Him.” It is God the Father’s will that we live our lives through Jesus. Who is like you, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in splendor, doing wonders?
Exodus 15:11
Indeed, even though there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth-as in fact there are many gods and many lords-yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.
1 Corinthians 8:5-6
Gracious God, you are willing to reach down, making me your child. I exist only for you, yet I worship false idols of my own making. Please take away my appetite for things I think I can't live without. Grant me the clarity to distinguish the gift from the Giver. Help me desire the comfort of your presence alone. Amen.
