Ascension Day affirms the body. Christ ascends bodily. It affirms our identity as people who are bodies as well as souls and spirits. We don’t have a body. We are a body. And the ascension foreshadows the reality that Jesus who ascends bodily will return bodily to bring us with Him body, soul and spirit. The Spanish artist, Camilo, who painted this bodily resurrection also includes a very important detail in the body of Christ. You will find this detail in His hands and His feet. These holes will always be part of His body.
The Lord said, "I will grant peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and no one shall make you afraid."
Leviticus 26:6
Jesus said, "But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out the demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you."
Luke 11:20
Jesus, you proclaimed, "A house divided cannot stand." Forgive me for my divisiveness. I too easily imagine I am the glove of God through whom you work. But mostly I point fingers of blame instead of acknowledging your nail-pierced hands. Open my heart and hands to welcome strangers as family. Amen.
