What is the cost of seeking and saving the lost? In this image, Zacchaeus is up a tree and Jesus invites him down to sup with Him. Remember the verse, “I stand at the door and knock?” (Rev 3:20). Jesus won’t take no for an answer. But the price of lunch is not the cost to Zacchaeus but it is the same price Jesus pays for anyone who will eat with Him. He gets us down from our tree (illusions, fears, doubts, suspicions, unforgiveness, resentments) but then He does for us what He did for Zacchaeus. He takes our place. You see the empty tree in the photo. He becomes what we are and He dies for it on the cross. This is how He pays the price for lunch. Jesus becomes our sin…our rebellion…our hostility and pays for it with His life. And we get off, not “scott free,” but Jesus free! Join the likes of Zacchaeus! That’s what our church is, a gang of no goods make good by God.
For the brokenness of the daughter of my people I am broken. Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there?
Jeremiah 8:21-22
Jesus said to Zacchaeus, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost."
Luke 19:9-10
Great Physician, I am broken. You are my balm. I am lost. You seek and find me. I am orphaned. You adopt me as your child. I am a sinner. You forgive me. I am greedy. You are generous to me. I clamor for more. You sacrificed even your life. I bow down and surrender to you. Amen.
