Mary and Elizabeth touch the babies each of them is carrying. How many of you have had the blessing of touching the body of a pregnant woman to feel the life of the child growing within? The artist, Van Der Weyden, in this detail of his art, “The Visitation,” captures a vital part of the story of how God’s Kingdom comes on earth. It comes through the natural creative gift of child bearing. The touch that the women share adds the powerful connection that women give to one another when they know that their bodies are creating a new human being. What every mother also knows is that the calm connection these two are sharing will become a moment of anguish and pain as their children are finally born. The difference between being pregnant and giving birth reveals one of the hardest truths of following Jesus. Trouble, disappointment, difficulty, and even sadness are a part of living in the Kingdom. But life comes out of such challenges and pain just as it does in giving birth to a child. When you follow Jesus you will have both.
Hanna made a vow, saying, "Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life."
1 Samuel 1:11 NIV
Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her.
Luke 1:57-58
Lord Almighty, you see my misery. You have not forgotten me. Despite my wandering ways, you show me great mercy. I cry out to you and my heart rejoices when I do not get what I deserve. Today I surrender my family and all that I am to you. Strengthen us, and show me how to serve you. Amen.
