Today, Jeff and Jill discuss the idea of signs and wonders. A sign indicates or points to something and imbues it with meaning, e.g., the shape and color of street signs mean specific things like caution, stop, or limits. A wonder is something beautiful or unexpected that causes us to pause in awe and admiration. I asked the “Perplexity AI Model” to find a picture that best captured the sense of “wonder.” The above picture is the result. It reminds me of the words of Psalm 8 — “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?” Whereas the invisible attributes of God are plainly visible in his creation: His eternal power and divine nature (Romans 1:19), it is the cross of Jesus Christ where we marvel at God’s great and steadfast love for humanity and stand in awe at the empty tomb with the promise and guarantee of eternal life by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is the sign, wonder and guarantee of God’s love toward us — and you cannot buy the Spirit, only receive Him gladly through faith. Glory be to God!
O give thanks to the Lord of lords, who alone does great wonders, for his steadfast love endures forever.
Psalm 136:3-4
The crowds with one accord listened eagerly to what was said by Philip, hearing and seeing the signs that he did. So there was great joy in that city.
Acts 8:6, 8
Lord of lords, I am grateful for your everlasting, steadfast love. If I'm honest, I spend more time striving for my own great wonders. Such efforts, however, are insignificant and fleeting compared to what you have done for me. I long to hear news of your work in Jesus. That alone gives me joy and meaning. Amen.
