If Popeye (pictured above) had been a Jew living in Colossae at the time St Paul was preaching this message, he would have wanted to fight. It was unthinkable that God would want to dwell in a person. But if that were possible, then certainly not a person who was imperfect. Gentiles are imperfect people. Unless they became Jews they could never be good enough for God. God would have to be crazy to dwell in them. But that is the mystery that today’s texts reveal. The Creator of the Heavens and the Earth, chooses with whom He will dwell. And this God has chosen you. This God has chosen me. And that is the mystery of being saved that God chooses imperfect people as His dwelling place. This is the good news. We don’t have to clean up our act for God to be in us. When God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit choose us for their home, they make us clean. We do nothing. God does everything. So you and I should stop fighting God’s will. Just trust His decision to dwell in you. One day, God will tell you more. But until then rest in God. He is God after all. It is His glory that He chose to live in you.
There is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.
Daniel 2:28
To them God chose to make known how great among the gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
Colossians 1:27
God in heaven, thank you for revealing yourself to me. I see you all around me. You are in the babbling brook, the quivering leaves, the song of the birds, and all the other mysteries that surround me. You sent Jesus to be the hope of glory. He gives me hope and peace. He is all I need. Amen.
