Law and gospel are expressed as contrasts by the stone tablets given to Moses and the cross that killed Jesus on Good Friday. Our ForgivinLivin.org ministry is grounded in the truth that we cannot do what the law requires and in fact we do the opposite of what its demands. And as a result we hate the law. It always reminds us of how far short we have fallen. But without this verdict of our loss, of our failure, of our intimate love for evil, we would never know how deeply we need the absolute love of God revealed to us in Jesus Christ our Lord. In his death, Jesus becomes our transgressions and our rebellion and our denial. When God opens our eyes to see this wonderful exchange or sweet swap, that Jesus becomes our sin and we become His holiness, we begin to love without limit our Christ on the cross, who completely removes all our transgressions and iniquities by making them His own. Consider this verse from John 1:17: “the law was given through Moses but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”
Our transgressions indeed are with us, and we know our iniquities: transgressing and denying the Lord.
Isaiah 59:12-13
If anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
1 John 2:1
Patient God, my life is not a reflection of your divine image. My sins are smudge marks that prevent others from seeing your beauty through me. I'm left only with gratitude for your forgiveness. Thank you for deeming me worthy of Jesus' sacrifice, wiping away the stain of my sin. Equip me to reflect your beauty. Amen.
