(Irishcast) Humbled, Forgiven,And Restored (Ps 119v67; John 21v16) (Forgiveness)

Peter’s denial on Maundy Thursday takes place at the house of Caiaphas just outside the walls of Jerusalem. There is a statue there that represents Peter’s humbling moment when he denied our Lord in front of three people. But a some days later and after a walk of about 100 miles, Jesus meets His follower who has denied Him. He’s on the beach of the Sea of Galilee and He is cooking breakfast. Peter comes to Him from the boat in which he and other disciples had been fishing all night without catching anything. But the real catch is that Peter knows Jesus has forgiven him. He doesn’t even ask to be forgiven. He just hears the words of his restored commission to love the sheep that Jesus will give him. Again there is a stature here that reminds us that if Jesus can forgive and restore someone who disappointed Him as much as Peter did there is hope for you and for me. Being humbled, being forgiven and being restored. This is the way when we follow Jesus. Peter is the first of millions of followers to show this way to us.

Prayer

Thank you, Good Shepherd, for your faith and trust in me to care for others in your flock. I know I have wandered from your presence, but your love calls me back and leads me to pleasant pastures. Strengthen me to tend to those in my care. Provide me with an extra measure of your mercy and goodness. Amen.
