The law always exposes our powerless condition. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus makes all the old laws harder to obey by showing us that the real problem is not what we do but why we do it. That’s why the disciples cry out to Jesus just after the rich young man talks to him in Matthew 19. Jesus reveals our powerlessness to keep the law from the bottom of our hearts. His solution is to have His heart as a transplant. This heart can keep the law completely because we are powered by Christ within us. This is the fulfillment of the gospel message. Christ is in us. He fulfills God’s law. It’s impossible for us but not for God.
Keep my commandments and live; keep my teachings as the apple of your eye.
Proverbs 7:2
The young man said to Jesus, "I have kept all these; what do I still lack?"
Matthew 19:20
Protecting God, thank you for your commandments that lead me to life in you. I must confess I seldom live up to the letter of the law, so I lean on the promise of forgiveness you give in Christ. Help me, then, to keep your word and live the greatest commandment of loving you and my neighbors. Amen.
