One of our Irish adventures was a stop at a sheep farm. The shepherd gave us some great insights into how he works with dogs to handle his sheep. You can’t see the shepherd in the photo but the dog can hear his voice. The dog is doing what his master tells him to do and the dog pushes the sheep into the pen. In the Bible we know God speaks to us, not as dogs, but as sheep. We hear his voice. Solomon hears the voice of God in his prayer. Jesus hears the voice of God in the biblical text in contrast to the devil’s voice of temptation. Whenever we open the Bible we have the privilege of hearing God speak to us. Ask, seek and knock, Jesus tells us so that we may hear what our Lord wants to say to us. As you listen to the Mission Cast today, you will have the opportunity to hear the word of God for you.
The LORD said to Solomon, "Ask what I should give you." And Solomon said, "Give your servant, therefore, an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil."
1 Kings 3:5-6, 9
The devil took Jesus to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, and he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me." Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan!"
Matthew 4:8-10
Lord of all goodness, I worship and bow down to you alone. Forgive me for honoring false idols and things that do not fulfill. Lead me not into temptation. Get behind me Satan. Give me an understanding mind for all I do, able to discern between good and evil. May my words and actions reflect your goodness today. Amen.
