(Theta) Setting Captives Free (Psalm 142:7 & Act 12:5)
The Moreau College Initiative has been giving prisoners a college education for over 10 years. This video (https://video.wnit.org/video/moreau-college-initiative-vdbhv9) gives you a brief overview of the effectiveness of how learning can change a prisoner’s life. One of the college graduates is Tommy Shannon. He said this about the experience. “Everybody left ego, pride at the door and only came with a heart and hunger for healthy discussions that prompted growth” The narrator, Mr. Ghormley, says this: “There is a kind of a saying in prison that there are no friendships that everyone is just in survival mode. Everything is “quid pro quo” in the classroom. They first learn to be classmates and then even colleagues, and then even community and they might not say it, but we can see friendship actually flourish.” The prisoners discovered that they needed each other. This is our experience as well when our slavery to sin is broken by Jesus and the communion of other freed prisoners (sinner/saints) called the church. We are all in the ministry of setting captives free.
