A cathedral forces you to look up. When you look up your eyes are connected to the hidden God whose presence came down to earth in worship in your cathedral. Cathedrals were created to connect the heaven and the earth. These immense worship structures were built over many generations. What we see now was under construction for years. The original builders may never have seen the completed sanctuary. But they built by faith in expectation that one day this worship center would allow a future generation to experience the intersection with God on earth. You and I are also called temples by God. “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple” (1 Corinthians 3:16-17). Paul reaffirms this message in other places as well. But this means that the transcendent power of God flows through us, the body of Christ, the church. No one will pay an admission fee to gape at us like they do at cathedrals around the world, but in God’s eyes we are what God says He is building. A temple. Holy. Precious. Beloved. God is building us to bring the light of His gospel to the world. He brings this light through “agape” love. When people look at us and know that we are loved by the Creator of the heavens and the earth, they will gape and wonder. And we pray they will also ask, “how can I know that I am being built as a temple to the Lord?”
Then the nations that are left all around you shall know that I, the LORD, have rebuilt the ruined places and replanted that which was desolate.
Ezekiel 36:36
There was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne and to the Lamb!"
Revelation 7:9-10
Lamb of God, what joy it is to know that I will be part of the multitude around your throne. Thank you for saving me from this sinful world. Thank you for forgiving me and washing me clean. I'm sorry for the times I put boundaries around your grace. Remind me again that your love is for all nations. Amen.
