REFUGE in caves for Christians fleeing Roman persecution is today’s theme from the “Daily Texts.” This is Cappadocia in Turkey, We were visiting these cave homes yesterday as well as their chapels. They are all cut into the rocks in this community in central Turkey. The caves gave these early believers a place of refuge when Roman armies were arresting believers here. These cave dwellings also became the site of the first monastery in this region. People who sought refuge in Christ eventually went out into the world to make the message of Jesus known to all they would meet. This is why we are saved. We are called to bring our refuge in Jesus to all we may meet. Last night, our group gathered in an underground cave that is a part of our hotel in Cappadocia. One member of our group, Tim Peterson, proclaimed the entire letter to the Philippians from memory. We could imagine ourselves as early followers of our Lord listening to Paul himself as we heard the message of his letter. Consider what it means for you to be sent into the world for Jesus’ sake that people who are lost, lonely and destitute may find their refuge in Jesus Christ.
Do not let me be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.
Psalm 25:20
Jesus said, "I live, you also will live."
John 14:19
Jesus, thank you for being the God of restoration from our shame, pain, and circumstances. I can become paralyzed in my embarrassment. You come beside me and help me to see beyond pain and death into new life in you. As I lean into the resurrected life with you, may it inspire those struggling today. Amen.
