Today’s texts reveal the tension in our relationship to God that is often overlooked. We all like to make God in our own image and we usually fall on either the side of kindness or severity. Today’s texts force us to look at both. Therefore, let us look. Look hard and consistently at those places in the Bible that reveal this tension to you. Lutherans call this tension, law and gospel. Today we will use the words of Paul in Romans 11:22, severity and kindness. We pray that as we are immersed in God’s severity, we may cling ever more fiercely to His kindness.
But of you I will not make an end. I will chastise you in just measure, and I will by no means leave you unpunished.
Jeremiah 30:11
Do you not realize that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?
Romans 2:4
Forgiving Lord, I often misinterpret your disciplining hand. Unlike me, when confronting wrongs you work through lovingkindness to redirect. Unfortunately, I too often long for revenge. Open my heart to understand your ways of redemption rather than retribution. Today, school me in your loving plan and heal my wounded heart. Amen.
