The assurance that our God is the one who unites the whole earth was the theme of this hymn written by John Oxenham, whose real name was William J. Dunkerly, a businessman (1852-1941). Hymnologist Albert Bailey, wrote that Oxenham began writing “to relieve the tedium of long journeys . . . and soon discovered that he liked writing better than business.” His poem was originally prepared in 1908 for an exhibition for the London Missionary Society on the theme “The Orient in London.” But his volume was rejected by publishers. When Oxenham self-published it, the book sold 285,000 copies. The theme of uniting the whole world in the death and resurrection of Jesus reveals the truth about our fallen nature. No person can save himself or herself. Once God reveals that our salvation and our identity is in Christ alone, then we are like St. Paul in Galatians 2:20 “it is no longer we who live, but Christ who lives in us.” Now there are no barriers east or west, north or south for we see all people as those for whom Jesus Christ has died and will come and make Himself known to them. He is the One who brings us to God our Father in the full forgiveness of all our sins.
Rise up, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations belong to you!
Psalm 82:8
Then Peter began to speak to them: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every people anyone who fears him and practices righteousness is acceptable to him."
Acts 10:34-35
Lord of the nations, I rejoice that my soul belongs to you and that your judgments are certain, impartial, and just. Thank you for calling me into relationship with you. Create in me the "art of the tremble" that reverences you and cherishes your word. By your Spirit, give me holy desires to please you and live with integrity. Amen.
