This simple line drawing of Mary was created by my seven year old granddaughter who lives in Florida. (She also created the picture for yesterday’s image of Jesus calling his disciples.) Her drawing reminded me how the artist Picasso might have created the mother of our Lord. It is an image where you can color in the meaning that you have for her. In Mary’s mind, she was a simple young woman whom God had chosen for this great privilege. She knew herself as dust into whom God breathed the breath of life. Her strength and purpose came from the source of her life, her God. This is also our testimony. It is not us who are important, it is what God does through us. As you listen to the podcast today, you will hear stories of “dusty” people through whom God brought powerful change. Let us pray that our Lord will show each of us how He wants to use us as He used Mary and the others to be strong witnesses in their day.
He raises up the poor from the dust.
1 Samuel 2:8
And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowly state of his servant."
Luke 1:46-48
Lavish Lord, I cannot earn your blessings or control the struggles I encounter. You give me favor when I don't deserve it. I experience misfortune in unexpected ways. You are there with great love and mercy to receive me. Ignite my spirit to know the magnitude of love, so that with Mary, I can rejoice in you, my Savior. Amen.
