Martin Luther was not born a broken man. He believed in “will power” and put all his confidence in doing what he believed God wanted him to do. But he failed with will power. And one day a friend shook him and declared to him, “Luther, you spend so much time making yourself miserable for God’s sake. Why don’t you consider how God became miserable for your sake?” That was the straw that broke his back. That night changed his life forever. He knew he was broken. But only God could reveal to him the truth that God would make him whole. God broke through for him. Martin has been an example to all of us who know that only God can save us from our vain strivings of our will power to save ourselves. We can all be thankful that he did not stop striving until he was overcome by God. God gave him the power that his “will power” could never accomplish. How about you? Is today the day that the Holy Spirit will give you the power to believe that it is God’s work alone that makes you whole?
Why do you contend against God, saying, "He will answer none of my words?" For God speaks in one way and in two, though people do not perceive it.
Job 33:13-14
Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.
Revelation 2:7
Sovereign God, forgive my stubborn thoughts and actions that do not meet your expectations. How tired you must be with my disobeying your leading and teaching. My sinful self thinks I know better than to listen and follow you. Change me. Attune my ears to hear the needs of others in my community. Amen.
