Lord Lead Us (Psalm 127:1; Luke 5:5 6)

Peter knows how to fish. He also knows how to obey Jesus. But he didn’t know how to catch as many fish as our Lord provided. When you and I fail at something that we know how to do, it’s hard for us to ask Jesus for help. So we often wait, until we have run out of ideas to ask Jesus for the direction He is ready to give. But sometimes His message is wait, as yesterday’s verse reminded us. And then are we willing to do what our Lord tells us is our purpose now, namely wait, so He can get His work done for us? Try waiting next time. See what good things come to you. This painting by John August Swanson of “The Great Catch” helps us see the abundance of all that God has waiting for us to catch.

Old Testament Verse

Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.
Psalm 127:1

New Testament Verse

Simon answered, "Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets." When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to burst.
Luke 5:5-6

Prayer

Thank you, Lord, that in you I find a home base. Forgive my fishing all night to build my own success. Turn my attention from consumption and collection to your provision. Help me to see the abundance, contentment, and direction you offer. Call me from my fishing and my empty nets to getting caught up with you. Amen.
