Jeff and Mim discuss how God liberates and rescues us from our chains and bondage to sin so that we might receive divine grace and love and then extend that same grace and love to our neighbors through freedom in loving service. Martin Luther wrote, “A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none; a Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all (“The Freedom of a Christian”). Luther advocated that we “put on” our neighbor, like you would “put on” (or clothe yourself with)Christ. We need to understand their perspective and needs so that we stand with and for them as brothers and sisters whom Christ died to redeem. This type of missional living will be in the ordinary, daily practical tasks of life, as we learn their language and culture to truly listen to their needs, fears, worries and anxieties so that we might offer practical help with housing, access to legal and medical services, education, food, transportation and navigating their new life. The Lord called Israel out of Egypt from bondage and slavery. The Lord’s will is grounded in his redemptive and graceful action. We are called to freedom, not to live for ourselves, but to live to the glory of God and for the sake of others. May God grant us grace to walk in his ways.
I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
Exodus 20:2
For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters, only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become enslaved to one another.
Galatians 5:13
What a miracle that you, God, call me to rise up to live as your free child! Discipline me in the way I should live through love. Father, guide me by the liberating Spirit of Christ, to free me from slavery to myself. Help me to be enslaved to my neighbor in love. What a calling! What a Savior! Amen.
